Most people know a consumer unit as a 'fuse box.' They are a series of MCB's (mini circuit breakers) that can turn electrical circuits on or off within your home. They're designed to trip when there is a fault, keeping you safe.
Did you know that upgrading and replacing your consumer unit has a number of benefits?
Safety – always top of the list, safety is the most important reason by far. Upgrading your consumer unit can significantly increase the electrical safety of your home because modern consumer units have mini circuit breakers (MCB’s) and residual current devices (RCD’s) which are more sensitive to detecting changes in current and faults than older units.
Property value – an updated consumer unit can increase the value of your home. As well as the peace of mind of having a new, modern unit, you’ll also be given all relevant documentation and certificates as proof that your new unit meets current regulations.
Ease of use – on the rare occasion your electricity trips out, a modern consumer unit only needs a simple flick of a switch to get you back in the light again. Much easier than old consumer units that are very fiddly and often need a new fuse wire putting in.
Parts – as with a lot of things as they get older, a consumer unit can sometimes need a repair. The older your consumer unit is, the more difficult it’ll be to source the replacement parts as manufacturers generally stop supporting their older products after a number of years to enable them to produce new ones.
Replacing a consumer unit is done in a few different steps:
An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) will be completed to determine the condition of your current electrical installation.
We'll isolate your power supply so we can safely remove your existing consumer unit.
Your new consumer unit will be installed.
All connections will be tested throughout your home to ensure everything is working as expected following your new installation.
Switch back on your power supply, complete one final electrical test and issue an EIC (Electrical Installation Certificate).
